  • More deep thinkers planned

This year's OECD study demonstrates that individuals with better qualifications are less likely to be unemployed than those with poorer qualifications. In Germany, a university education provides better protection against unemployment than in other industrialised nations. The percentage of the population completing higher education in Germany, however, remains below the OECD average. Germany has in fact fallen back from 10th to 22nd place in the international ranking list. In autumn the German government will be launching a national training campaign. The aim is to have 40 percent of any year-group enter higher education, explained Federal Minister of Education, Annette Schavan, at the presentation of the OECD Study, "Education at a Glance 2007".

  • Liberal arts...

"If one had to identify one thing that separates American higher education most definitively from the European, it is that liberal education is distinguished by its non-professional, non-vocational orientation. Europe and other countries have nothing like this in their prevailing systems of higher education. In Europe, for example, students who graduate from the academic high schools or secondary schools (gymnasia) must declare a profession or field they intend to specialize in when they apply to institutions of higher education. Higher education in these countries is therefore much more like our professional schools than our four-year colleges and universities. In Europe and elsewhere, the introduction of an intermediate level between high school and the professional degree in law, medicine, business, or public administration is new—even revolutionary."

  • Democracy, critical thinking...

"Introducing liberal education requires the introduction of notions of tolerance, critical thinking, and the ability to understand different points of view. Jonathan Becker, Dean of International Studies at Bard College, emphasizes how Bard’s interest in the democratization of other countries and their system of higher education is connected with the application of critical thinking to a wide range of disciplines and types of problems and issues. Dale Eickelman, a professor of anthropology and humans relations at Dartmouth College, who is involved with Dartmouth’s close partnership with American University of Kuwait, thinks introducing the concept of critical thinking is probably the best way of introducing countries like Kuwait to the ideal of American liberal education. He says (in the IHE article by Redden) that critical thinking is a more universal concept and one that is more readily understandable by other cultures than “liberal arts,” which is a “culture-bound term.”

Well you seem knowledgeable and I admire your conviction about the American system, I do think both systems, the American and the European (as many others as well) seem to work. Good scientists are produced on either side of the Atlantic. WW2 is certainly a sensitive subject, which needed many decades to be objectively discussed by Germans.
Maybe I used the wrong term, is "in depth discussion" a technical term only used for discussions among people with a higher University degree? If that's the case I must apologize, that's certainly not what I meant. That is obviously something you can find at almost every University in the world. I was referring to coffee break discussions among people without specialization in that specific subject.
My very subjective impression in Britain (where I've been living for over two years now) but other places as well. People discuss matters of their own profession and pop culture, but very few young people seem to read the newspapers and discuss, whatever (social problems, environmental issues, politics, historic questions...). Nothing against the British, I love them for other reasons. That's just my impression of that matter.

@ Ted, what's your problem ? Why do you write so many posts only because Expat said he misses "deep conversations" in Germany ? He just expressed his own opinion and feelings. I had deep discussions with people from many countries. But I think Expat's comment was no reason to start posts saying how bad the German education system is.

@ guy from Ankara: Good luck for you exam. Which subject do you study ? I've also not been the most hard working student. sad I hope you will be lucky so that exactly the things that you have studied well will be on the exam. I think you can do well because you seem like an intelligent person.

@ proud Brazilian: In this study the British research institute only asked people around the world if they had a postive or negative view about certain countries. But they didn't ask for the reasons, right ? I noticed in this study it said that many German and also Turkish people had a sceptical opinion about other countries.

My personal theory is this: Sometimes Germany and also Turkey get some unfair and negative press abroad. So some people might get sad and disappointed. Maybe that makes sceptical.

Personally I don't know any Germans who hate Brazil. Many Germans like drinking caipirinha or doing capoeira and they also see Brazil as a growing economy. I guess the Germans who said they don't like Brazil said so because of the big difference between the rich and poor or the violence that is sometimes shown on tv. Sometimes movies like "cidade deus" show only the negative aspects of Brazil. Don't you think so ?

But those Germans who think negative about Brazil should know that many Brazilians are giving money to charity in order to help the poor people. And those critical Germans could also do more in order to help poor people. I don't agree to those people who think negative about Brazil. Please don't think that Germans hate Brazil. Those 40% of German people who said they don't like Brazil probably also don't like Germany or anything in the world.

@ Israel: There are some interracial couples in Germany. Unfortunately there are still racists in Germany but they are not the majority. My girlfriend is also from another religion and ethnic background and our family and friends all support us. Her family accepts me and my family accepts her. I hope some day Martin Luther king's dream will come true that all people will be judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin or their ethnicity or nationality.

I have read one book by Karl May and it was like a Wild West Story. I don't think that it had any racist messages. The Indians are shown as nicer people than the European settlers. But the book was a bit lengthy and I didn't finish it.

Why do you research so much about Germany, what kind of books hitler liked etc ? How do you want to know what I have in my head ? You have to understand that people in a country are not all the same !!

In Germany there was a "students revolution" in the 60s and the generation of my parents rebelled against the old racist ways of thinking. This and of course the reeducation done by the Allies helped to erase the poison of the nazi idiology out of peoples minds.

Also you seem to be so proud of Brazil and you look down on Germany and Argentina. So in a way you think like ignorant people here in Germany. You cannot decide what people in the world should think about Germans and I don't think you have asked anybody in the world.

I could lower myself to your level and start writing insults about Brazil but I won't do that. Did you just enter this forum because you wanted to insult Germans ? I guess in other forums people would just tell you to f*** off and only Germans always try to justify themselves for being alive.

If all Brazilians that I have met were like you I'd also not like Brazil. This has nothing to do with your ethnicity but with your way of thinking, generalizing and talking bad about other countries !! I dislike every ignorant person no matter if he is asian, black or european.

For the guy who stated that American Sucks, I wonder if he has ever been there, or is just another bitter German. Lets see, Germany you can not open a business without being taxed into oblivion, go to the college you want or even pay your phone bill online. The Government controls your life and everyone is miserable. I live here and hate it and my family is originally from here. America is the best country on Earth, those cowboys you speak of had a sense of adventure and the tenacity to tame an area five times the size of Germany (Yes, Germany is not bigger than the state of Oregon!)

My posts show that if anything Germans are much more likely to have vocational training than the general tertiary education needed for "deep conversations". So it is German arrogance to imagine that they are an "deep" country compared with others. In fact, this ("Kultur"blunk is one of their great racist, historical claims to "superiority" over the "capitalist" West and (later the Slavs) the propaganda basis for World War One. There is at least one post-graduate course in the US devoted to this topic. It centres around a 1916 book by Thomas Mann "Reflections of an Unpolitical Man" (I think only available in German), which the author tried to prevent being republished in the 1920s, read it and you can see why). Perhaps like many Germans, you don't understand this aspect of the history of Germany and should read this book. Some things remain the same in Germany.

But then.... those people exist everywhere. The best example is this forum. There are many people here arguing that their country is better.

My only personal impression is that people tend to discuss "deeper" subjects more often. Of course that is a horrible generalization and I have also met a lot of people in other countries who are just the same. And yes, my impression is probably very much biased, since I judge based on the people that surround me and not on statistics. I wouldn't know were to find statistics, which compare the main subject of discussions in coffee breaks between countries.
I believe that Germany still has quite a hierarchical system. Students get divided at age +-ten into "intellectual" groups, which are in effect social groups. If I have one critic about the German education system; it is elitist. I believe actually that students at the Gymnasium get a good basic knowledge, which doesn't need to hide behind other nations. The problem is that the majority of students finish school early and don't get such a broad educational background.

I can t get enough of this! Reading other peoples's opinions about Germany....BROTHERS, I LOVE YOU!! You speak the truth! Germany is ugly, and there are a lot og ugly people there! If you can avoid going there, do!! It's horrible, and being born there is a curse! Trying to get rid of it has taken me the greater part of 30 years now, and still no end in sight! I HATE GERMANY!

You told us what a bad country Germany is.
But Germany is good enough to pay development aid to Brazil every year? Of course, not many, but Germany is the second biggest payer after Japan for Brazil. Last year round about 50 Million Euro. Between 1950 and now more than 2 Billion Euro.
It seems, that Germany isn't the world-enemy number one anymore. Today, Germany is the world-social-welfare-office number one.
