Canada visitor tax refund
-
I heard that as a tourist I can get a refund of my sales taxes in Canada. I went to the Canada Revenue Agency website, but I did not find any information, so is this myth or a reality?

collecting GST refund for tourists / non-residents of Canada
First of all, it is not a government program. For some reason, this program is very hidden from public scrutiny and it is not directly operated by the Canadian government as similar programs in Germany or the Netherlands.
There is a company called "Global Refund Canada Ltd." that can process your refund application. You can pick up a form/envelop at the major airports in Canada or see them online at: http://www.ca.globalrefund.com
Some conditions apply for the refunds. First of all, you must claim a minimum of $14 in GST (That would be on a purchase of $200 and each individual receipt must show at least $3.50 in GST. In the case of the PST, Ontario will give you a refund on purchases over $625 (pre-tax pruchases). Finally, you need to have your receipts stamped by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency prior to leaving the airport and you must show every single item you are claiming to be taking to your home country to the authorities.
These refunds only apply to "things" you take with you and are not applicable to services (for examples, a stay in a hotel, a car rental, etc.) But they do apply to material objects purchased in Canda.
Does this help?
